Pre-Auction Notes: Pair of vintage Hmong embroidered story cloths (paj ntaub), each illustrating “The War in Laos Since 1976” across 13 intricately stitched scenes. These textiles document the post-Vietnam War persecution of the Hmong people by the Pathet Lao regime following their alliance with U.S. forces during the CIA-backed “Secret War” (1961–1975). The scenes likely depict flight through the Laotian countryside, guerrilla conflict, and refugee life in Thailand. Each piece is artist-signed Mee Xiong and bears a gallery label from Cama Crafts—a fair trade organization established in Thailand in the 1980s to support Hmong refugee artisans. Made in Thailand, circa 1990s.
Dimensions are of each cloth.
