Pair of antique 19th-century cookbooks, sold together. Includes “The Appledore Cook Book” by M. Parloa, New Edition, 1883, published by DeWolfe, Fiske & Co., Boston. Handsome brown cloth with decorative black stamping, containing practical receipts for plain and rich cooking. With several handwritten 19th-century recipe pages laid in (plum cake, plum pudding, etc.) along with additional handwritten notes on rear blanks. Light foxing and kitchen wear; binding cracked at hinges but holding.
Second volume is “Dr. Chase’s Recipes; or, Information for Everybody,” an 1870s household, medical, and cookery manual packed with remedies, culinary instruction, and engravings. This copy shows heavy wear: spine loss, detached and taped sections, staining, and fragile binding, but retains its content and several period clippings/notes as found. A charming pair of well-used Victorian kitchen and household books with great character and original handwritten ephemera.
