Large paper lithograph–on–wood toy ship with original wooden wheels and masts, decorated in patriotic motifs and marked “Uncle Sam” at the bow. Constructed with lithographed paper panels over wood, with applied wood components for smokestacks, turrets, and masts. Condition is fair with significant wear including paper losses, tears, flag damage, and missing parts, though much of the original decoration remains.
These toy battleships were produced in the early 20th century, around the time of the Spanish–American War and the rise of the “Great White Fleet,” when U.S. naval power was celebrated in both popular culture and children’s toys. Patriotic toys such as this one were marketed under names like “Uncle Sam” and decorated with eagles, shields, and stars to inspire national pride. Surviving examples are scarce due to their fragile paper construction and heavy play use, making even worn specimens desirable to collectors of early Americana and antique toys.
