This illustrated edition of Dante Alighieri's epic poem features 70+ full-page engravings by Gustave Doré depicting the journey through Hell. The translation by Henry Francis Cary was among the most famous English versions of the work. The volume is bound in decorative cloth boards with embossed title and illustration on front cover. Extensive red marker annotations appear throughout approximately two-thirds of the text, including underlining and marginal notes, though the illustration pages remain unmarked. The binding exhibits multiple breaks throughout, with sections of pages separated from each other and from the spine; no loose pages are apparent but the volume requires careful handling. Brown cloth boards show wear consistent with age and use.
