Antique sepia-tone photogravure or lithographic reproduction after Jean-Baptiste Greuze's painting "L'oiseau mort" (The Dead Bird) from the Musée du Louvre collection. Print depicts young woman in classical draped clothing looking downward in melancholic pose at dead bird resting on table before her. Soft romantic rendering captures the sentimental theme popular in eighteenth century French painting, with symbolic meaning related to lost innocence or mourning. Label at top reads "Musée du Louvre - 882 - L'oiseau mort - Greuze - V phot" identifying this as museum reproduction number 882 produced photographically. Image surrounded by decorative gilt border with repeating geometric pattern on all four sides. Mounted on cardboard backing. Unframed. Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805) was prominent French painter known for moralistic genre scenes and sentimental subjects. Print exhibits significant condition issues including heavy edge wear and losses to border particularly at corners, surface soiling and staining throughout image, foxing spots visible, creasing from handling, substantial damage and loss of gilt to decorative border, and age-related wear to backing board. Overall fragile condition.
