Antique illustrated Halloween postcard titled “Hallowe’en,” showing a woman in orange and black harlequin attire holding a mirror and candle as black cats leap toward a witch flying across a full orange moon. Verse below reads: “If you will but backward go several rods or so— / With a mirror by the handle, / And a brightly burning candle, / You will surely meet your fate. / Now’s the time, ’tis ne’er too late.” Marked “H-44” and “Made in U.S.A.” Postmarked Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, October 26, 1922, and addressed to Miss Esther Mitchell, Rochester, New York. Handwritten note on verso conveys greetings and inquiry about her work. The mirror imagery references an old Halloween superstition that one could glimpse a future sweetheart’s face by candlelight. General wear and tear consistent with age and handling, including light corner and edge wear and mild surface soiling. Each postcard includes a poly sleeve and rigid top loader.
