Lot 001 - Antique Half Plate Ambrotype Occupational Photograph Of Man Operating Apple Grinder And Cider Press, In Full Split Leatherette Case

Antique half plate ambrotype depicting a cider-mill worker operating a two-stage apple-processing setup inside a workshop. At the left, the man grips the handle of a large gear-driven apple grinder used to crush apples into pomace. Adjacent to it on the right is a screw-driven cider press with stacked cloth-wrapped pomace packets beneath the platen, ready for pressing. This rare image clearly documents both grinding and pressing stages of 19th-century cider production.

The ambrotype exhibits extensive crackling to the original black varnish (japanning) applied behind the collodion image — a typical deterioration pattern for the process and difficult to restore without risk to the photograph. Loss to collodion in upper right corner of image. Housed in its full split leatherette case with matching mat and preserver. Separated case cover has green pillow. Preserver split at corner, and case lacks bottom green border felt. Light wear consistent with age and handling.
