Antique chromolithograph after French painter Jean Béraud (1849–1935), copyrighted 1899 by Craig R. Evans, depicting a woman dressed in a dark Musketeer-style costume reclining on a couch with a sword resting across her lap. The subject’s costume corresponds to that worn by actress and singer Marguerita Sylvia in Béraud’s painting “L’Escrimeuse (The Fencing Girl),” created in Paris, which helped popularize the fashionable image of the female fencer in the late 19th century. Presented under glass in the original dark wood frame with gilt liner and wood backboard. Some modern nails added for stability alongside original square-head nails. Split visible in upper left corner where a small section was previously broken and reattached. Light wear consistent with age and display.
