Antique cabinet card photograph depicting the original tombstone of Sarah Philena Barnard, wife of Alonzo Barnard, a Sioux missionary who died October 9, 1883, “of quick consumption, the result of ten years’ exposure and suffering as a missionary for the good of the Indians.” The inscription notes the stone was brought from Selkirk, Manitoba, in 1883, later lost and recovered, and “reverently restored” June 21, 1888. Handwritten notes on verso identify the location as Walhalla, North Dakota, and reference the Sioux Missionary context. Photographed by A.P. Doland, Crookston, Minnesota.
