"A New and Complete System of Universal Geography; Describing Asia, Africa, Europe and America; with Their Subdivisions of Republics, States, Empires and Kingdoms," by John Payne, with additions, corrections, and improvements by James Hardie, A.M. Volume II of four volumes, covering Africa. The section opens with "A New System of Geography. Book II. Of Africa in General." Published in New York, printed for and sold by John Low, Book-Seller, at the Shakespeares Head, No. 332 Water-Street, 1799. The title page describes the work as a comprehensive abridgement of universal geography with maps and plates, covering the history of man, customs, laws, governments, religions, sciences, commerce, and manufactures, along with a view of astronomy as connected with geography.

Bound in full brown leather with a gilt-tooled spine featuring repeated ship vignettes, chain borders, and a red leather title label lettered "Payne's Geography." Illustrated with engraved plates including an Egyptian mummy. This is Volume II only. The leather covers show scratching, scuffing, and wear to the edges and corners, with losses to the spine at the head and tail. Interior pages show toning and occasional staining.
