This antique illustrated religious emblem book presents biblical allegories and Christian imagery through wood engravings. The volume features a facsimile of the handwriting of Thomas Gray and includes multiple sections: Religious Allusions, Contents of Religious Emblems, and Contents of Religious Emblems. Among the illustrated religious allegories are "Looking unto Jesus," "Walking unto No Pasture," "The Spirit of Life unto Death," "In the Christ's Office of the District Court of Connecticut," and allegorical scenes depicting spiritual themes. Published by Bradley, Garretson & Co., Philadelphia, and William Garretson, New Haven, Connecticut, circa 1875. Bound in green embossed cloth with geometric cross-pattern border design and central gilt panel with ornate floral decoration reading "Bible Looking Glass." The binding shows significant wear with substantial loss to cloth covering on spine revealing text block, corner wear, edge losses, and scattered losses to decorative gilt surface. Interior pages show light foxing and age toning. A substantial example of Victorian-era religious publishing with elaborate emblematic illustrations.
