This antique abridged edition of "Stories from the Pentamerone" presents a selection of tales from Giambattista Basile's classic collection of Neapolitan fairy tales, selected and edited by E. F. Strange and illustrated by Warwick Goble. Published by Macmillan and Co., Limited, London, Bombay, Calcutta, Melbourne, with offices in New York, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, and Toronto, 1911. The book features hand-colored illustrations including a full-page frontispiece depicting "The Prince and Pops with the Strait-Licians" showing figures in ornate period costumes on classical steps with architectural elements and a peacock. The illustrated contents page lists twenty illustrations including "The Prince and Zeza, with the Story-Tellers," "The Slave at the Well," "Nennillo and Nennella in the Wood," "The Knitting and the Flea Flown," and additional plates. The note explains this collection of folk-tales was first published at Naples and in the Neapolitan dialect by Giambattista Basile circa 1637, following the translation by John Edward Taylor published in 1847. Bound in burgundy cloth with gilt decoration on front cover showing a figure in flowing robes, and gilt lettering on spine. Minor wear to cloth binding at corners and spine ends. Light foxing to pages. A handsome example of early 20th-century illustrated fairy tale publishing.
