Absentee bids let you place your maximum bid on an item before the live auction begins. During the live show, we’ll continue bidding on your behalf up to your max bid — just like leaving a bid with a traditional auctioneer.
When you place an absentee bid, you’ll choose a bid strategy. Your chosen strategy determines how the current bid will be set at the time your bid is placed. Your maximum bid always remains confidential.
The available strategies are:
🐢 Slow & Steady — starts your bid low and lets others chase you.
⚡💥 Power Bid — starts at about half your max to show intent without revealing your top number.
♥️♠️ All In ♦️♣️ — sets the current bid to your full bid amount right away.
The current bid shown on each lot reflects all confirmed absentee bids and updates automatically as new bids come in.
When the live auction starts, bidding will begin at the current bid. The auctioneer will continue bidding on behalf of absentee bidders up to their max bids.
Because absentee bids can arrive seconds apart, the current bid you see may not always include bids still being processed. Refresh the page for the most up-to-date information.

Lot 168 - "Dr. Rees's New Cyclopedia, The New Cyclopedia Or Universal Dictionary" Antique Reference Book, Volume XXXIV Part II, Siu To Sparaxis, Published 1816
This is Volume XXXIV, Part II of Dr. Rees's New Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences, covering entries from SIU to SPARAXIS, published in New York in 1816. The comprehensive reference work covers topics in biography, geography, and household knowledge across multiple subject areas. This volume includes plates at the rear of the book illustrating: Projection, Perspective, Short Hand, Miscellany (depicting patent locks), Magnetism, Block Machinery at Portsmouth, Horology Compensating Pendulums, Architecture Oblique Arch, Architecture Joinery, and Analysis - Gyration and Harmonic Curve. The rear cover identifies this as "List of Plates, Vol. XXXIV Part II" with publishers listed as "Architecture, Plate XXIII / Hydrology, Plate XXIII / Biography, Plate XXIII / Miscellany, Plate II / Geography and Hydrography, Plate XXIII / Short Hand, The Alphabet." The book is bound in paper-covered boards with leather spine, now detached. Many pages remain uncut with joined top edges, requiring cutting to open, and retain deckled edges characteristic of hand-made paper from this period. The text block shows significant wear with exposed sewing at spine, frayed and split edges, extensive foxing and age toning throughout, and moisture damage visible at corners and edges. Pages remain largely intact despite advanced deterioration. A substantial example of early 19th-century American encyclopedic publishing.
