This antique lithograph details the story of Maine's courageous Company C, 1st Regiment Maine Volunteer Cavalry fighting for the Union during the American Civil War. Along with fascinating illustrations that capture the heart of the war, it lists the personnel and engagements of the regiment including officers, deceased, deserters, and more. Notably it includes the names of Medal of Honor recipients Edward P. Tobie and Charles H. Smith. Medal of Honor recipient Sidney W, Thaxter, commander of the Regiment, is not listed on this register. The 1st Regiment Maine Volunteer Cavalry was mustered into service at Augusta, Maine on October 20, 1861. They were mustered out at Petersburg, Virginia on August 1, 1865. A monument to the regiment was dedicated at Gettysburg National Battlefield in 1889. This lithograph was printed by A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore, Maryland, and published by Geo M. Lanckton of Washington, DC. There is no date on this item, but based on the mustering out of the regiment, end of the war, and the printing companies listed, it likely dates to the mid to late 1860s. It comes in under glass in a wood frame in good condition.
